Alexander Schmidt is a contemporary composer with an equally contemporary sound. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he has made music since high school and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Production & Recording Arts at Elon University, North Carolina and a Master’s Degree in Music Composition at Butler University, Indiana. He has amassed a variety of influences from across the spectrum of music genres ranging from Pink Floyd to Ice Cube to Gustav Mahler and more. His sound rests at the synthesis point of tonal language and contemporary theory, most notably set theory. His music strives to complicate the gap between harmony and melody, resulting in startling sounds, progressions, and melodies. His most prominent work is his Sonata for Bassoon and Piano, a four-movement piece performed in the TUTTI Festival in March, 2024. Among other projects is The Mask of Sorrow, a chamber piece song devoted to the narrativization of the “Mask of Sorrow” statue overlooking a hill in Magadan, Russia, and Zone Rouge, a chamber piece inspired by the “Red Zones” established in France after World War I.
